ENSR specializes in state-of-the-art fate and transport analyses designed to study the movement and behavior of organic and inorganic constituents. In risk assessment, fate and transport evaluations are used to determine exposure point concentrations and clean-up standards. For permitting, fate and transport modeling is used during permit application development to demonstrate that facility releases will meet applicable standards.
For various projects, ENSR has conducted site specific fate and transport evaluations of chlorinated solvents that account for dilution and degradation. We have conducted tracer tests to evaluate advective and dispersive transport. Fate and transport studies play a key role in risk assessments by evaluation of:
- Soil to groundwater transport of site constituents
- Dilution attenuation of constituents in groundwater
- Discharge of constituents in groundwater to surface water
- Volatilization of constituents in groundwater and subsurface soil to indoor and outdoor air
- Volatilization of constituents from excavation trenches
- Particulate and dust suspension
- Bioaccumulation of constituents in fish, plants and animals

Cutting-edge Probabilistic Model Project
ENSR developed a cutting-edge probabilistic model to predict dioxin fate and transport in rivers, bioaccumulation in fish, and human exposure and health risks. ENSR successfully applied the model for NPDES permitting efforts.
